÷ Call for Applications :: Giga-Hertz-Prize 2012 and Walter-Fink-Prize ::

The "Giga-Hertz-Prize" and "Walter-Fink-Prize" are now accepting new applications for 2012. The Giga-Hertz-Prize for electronic and accusmatic music includes four special prizes. Their goal is to initiate and support new projects in the area of electronic and acousmatic music. The Walter-Fink-Prize for dance, electroacoustic music and media, sponsored by Walter Fink, aims at projects combining music and dance. Both prizes will be awarded at the IMATRONIC | Festival of Electronic Music in November 2012 at ZKM | Karlsruhe. [more]

÷ Preview :: Exhibitions at the ZKM | Karlsruhe in Spring 2012 ::

In March the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art concentrates on the revitalisation and active production of performance art in a museum context with the exhibition "Moments. A History of Perfomance in 10 Acts". At the same time it dedicates itself to the American writer William S. Burroughs within the exhibition "The Name is Burroughs". Meanwhile the main topic at the ZKM | Media Museum is sound in a contemporary understanding. The exhibition "Sound Art. Sound as Medium of Fine Art" presents the development of Sound Art in the 20th century. In April the exhibition "Dieter Meier. Works 1969–2011 and the YELLO Years" focusses on the Swiss musician and artist Dieter Meier, including a concert by Dieter Meier at ZKM. [more]

÷ Exhibition :: Digital Art Works. The Challenges of Conservation ::

Only until February 12: The exhibition "Digital Art Works. The Challenges of Conservation" at the ZKM | Media Museum fundamentally explores questions related to collecting, exhibiting, and maintaining computer-based art works and makes the work concerning digital conservation visible. Classics such as Nam June Paik's "Internet Dream" or Jeffrey Shaw's "The Legible City" will be available to visitors of the exhibition as well as the latest computer hackings by the Dutch artist duo Jodi, or the diagram poetry by the French artist Antoine Schmitt. ÷ Sensor. Time for Young Approaches :: 02_Isabell Heimerdinger and Markus Sixay ::

The second part of the exhibition series features works of art by Isabell Heimerdinger and Markus Sixay from the FER COLLECTION. In the main part of Isabell Heimerdinger's photographic, filmic, and installative studies, there moments of irritation, through which we are − subtly − made aware of our habits of seeing, and we begin to question them whereas Sixay explores with his work the possibilities and limits of sculpture through the creation of a frictional and ironic relationship with reality. ÷ Exhibition :: Symbiosis. 1.5 Tons of Global Entanglement ::

Symbiosis is an art project that deals with the worldwide problem of small arms. The objects are revealed as disabled small arms from the Burundi civil war, which have been repurposed as exhibits. At the close of the exhibition series, the exhibition objects can be purchased. The revenue from the sales will be donated directly to Caritas projects. [more]

The exhibition The Hirsch-Index. "The Art of Quotation" at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art investigates the ways in which artistic creativity and strategies of artists have evolved over the foregoing decades. As part of the discourse on the claim to originality of works of art and the role of the author, numerous exhibitions took place during the 1970s that dealt with such topics as the original, the after-image, the quote and the copy. In view of a flood of images a new look into this theme seems essential and reasonable. [more]

÷ Exhibition :: The State of Image. The Media Pioneers Zbigniew Rybczyński and Gábor Bódy ::

The exhibition "The State of Image. The Media Pioneers Zbigniew Rybczyński and Gábor Bódy" at the ZKM | Media Museum is the first to carry out a new evaluation of artistic and technical innovations for image research from the 1960s to the 1980s based on the model of two outstanding inventors, film-makers and media artists: Zbigniew Rybczyński and Gábor Bódy.
Rybczyński is the constructivist painter, draftsman and designer. Bódy by contrast, is the poet, linguist and semiotician − the dramatist. [more]

÷ Concert Series :: The University of Music Karlsruhe as Guest at ZKM ::

The annual concerts of the University of Music Karlsruhe (HfM) at the ZKM | Karlsruhe have been a lasting cooperation since 2007. On January 1st and February 2nd and 3rd new pieces from the degree programme composition and music informatics under the direction of Thomas A. Troge will be performed among others. They ressemble the work results of the students elaborated inside the "ComputerStudio" of the HfM. [more]

÷ Discussion :: Water for All? Between Economic Good and Human Rights ::

More than one billion people don't have access to clean drinking water − neither financially nor physically. How can we cope with this injustice? Who decides about supply, usage and distribution of water? The panel discussion is part of the exhibition "The Global Contemporary. Pianist Anna Zassimova accompanies the Installation "Sandbox (work in progress)" by Pooneh Maghazehe in the exhibition "The Global Contemporary. Art Worlds After 1989". In "Sandbox" the artist re-stages scenes drawn from the war propaganda film Hearts of the World (1915) on an unoccupied site adjacent to the ZKM, which, presently the location of the ZKM, until the end of 1940s was home to the Deutschen Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken AG. Treating a perennially contemporary problematic area in artistic production, namely, the question of success and failure, of happiness and unhappiness in the life of an artist, "The Radical Absence of Ronny Läpplinger" is the first tragicomic novel by art historian Dr. phil. Christian Saehrendt. Narrated in the apparently authentic autobiographic form of a diary, the story relates of how an artist, following a promising beginning in the international art business, is all of a sudden ignored; until he contrives to break out of his identity crisis as a prelude to celebrating his comeback at the dOCUMENTA 13. The technical, but also curatorial conservation of computer and video games, as well as digital works of art, share the same prerequisites and objectives. A central tool for the conservation of complex digital artifacts are emulators. These tools imitade obsolete operation systems on a modern system. ÷ Film screening and discussion :: The Frontier Gandhi ::

"The Frontier Gandhi: Badshah Khan, a Torch for Peace" tells the story of a Muslim peacemaker. In partnership with Mahatma Gandhi, Khan (also known as Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan) led a nonviolent resistance movement against British colonial rule in the first half of the 20th century. The documentary includes rare historical footage as well as a score by world music pioneer David Amram who will give a concert later that evening. Following the film screening a discussion round with director Teri McLuhan will take place. [more]

÷ Concert :: David Amram & Guests: From Khyber Pass to Karlsruhe ::

David Amram has been professionally active in the music business for a period extending over 60 years. He is above all known for his versatility as a musician, composer, jazz virtuoso and author. The 81-year old American has inspired many artists and has performed with them as well: among others Bob Dylan, Patti Smith and Judy Collins. He is particularly well-known on the French horn as a pioneer in jazz, which he has mastered no less than he has the piano, along with 35 other instruments. [more]
