353 THESAURUS
A thesaurus or synonym dictionary specifies for each dictionary entry one or more synonymic alternatives/categories/concept classes. Ambiguous entries are then replaced by many concepts and many different words (synonyms) may map onto the same 'concept' category. A thesaurus is an integral part of the total information retrieval system, and is used to gain multiple entry into the information by providing many more ways of formulating inquiries.
